God hates lies and liars

God, through the Bible has been very clear that he hates lies, falsehood, and deception. From a biblical perspective, this makes perfect sense: God is truth (John 14:6), and anything contrary to His nature—including lying—is sin and worthy of judgment.

Let's look at some verses to understand this better.

Proverbs 6:16–19
"There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers."

Nothing could be clearer, God hates lying, both in casual speech and in false witness (perjury, slander, or deception). It's not just disapproved—it’s an abomination to Him.

Proverbs 12:22
“Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who act faithfully are his delight.”

“Abomination” is the strongest term for moral revulsion in Scripture. God takes truth seriously because He is truth (John 14:6) and His Word is truth (John 17:17).

Colossians 3:9–10
“Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”

Lying is the natural to those who belong to Satan & are blinded by him. So lying belongs to the old self—the unregenerate nature. As new creations in Christ, believers have a new righteous nature and are called to truthfulness, reflecting the character of God.

Ephesians 4:25
“Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.”

The Christian life is marked by truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Deceit divides, but truth unites the body of Christ.

John 8:44 – Jesus to the Pharisees said
“You are of your father the devil… When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

Lying is not just sinful—it is satanic in origin. Jesus draws a clear line: God is truth, Satan is the father of lies.

Revelation 21:8
“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable… all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Lying is not a “small sin.” Persistent, unrepentant lying is a mark of those outside the kingdom of God.

Psalm 5:6
"You destroy those who speak lies;
the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.”

God's holy justice means He does not tolerate lies—they are destructive and lead to judgment.

Leviticus 19:11
“You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another.”

Even under the Mosaic law, God commands His people to be truthful. Lying violates God’s holiness and disrupts covenant community.

Summary:
*Lying is an offense against God’s holy character.

*God does not merely dislike lies—He hates and abhors them.

*Lying is tied to the nature of Satan, not of God's children.

*Christians are called to live in truth, as those renewed by the Spirit and walking in the image of Christ, who is the Truth (John 14:6).

*Christians are not to lie by affirming someone's sinful choices or relationships, or altered pronouns, nor to cowardly cater to such as if it is truth or loving. It isnt true nor loving to do so. But Satan and his children will do all they can on a personal level or try to force you to comply to such lies by legislation. We are to obey God over man.
