Damned by The Law
Jewish converts to Christ had come from Jerusalem and were incorrectly telling the converted Gentiles, “You’ve got to go back and do all those things that are in the Mosaic law.” They were basically saying “It is not enough for you that you have been saved by faith. In order to be truly saved, you must keep the law of Moses.” They were preaching a different gospel. Paul got really angry and wrote that was a horrendous distortion of the gospel!
In chapter 1:6, as you remember, he says, “I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed, damned, anathematized!” Says it again, “As we said before, I say now again, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you have received, he is to be accursed!” Paul has fury launched in the direction of any adulteration, alteration of the gospel.(1)
So he says...
Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
Galatians 4:21
Those who want to be bound to or bind themselves to the old laws that God did away with will be judged by that law.
In John 1:17 we see... For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
The Laws given to Israel bind them to death and damnation if they violate it 1x in their life by thought word or deed. Scripture tells us the whole world is under the Law of Sin and Death. But Christ brought salvation; redemption from the curse and the gift of eternal life.
Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Galatians 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree
Philippians 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith
The self righteous who think they can keep The Law (incl the nation of Israel who thinks just by God giving them the Law) that they are saved or "are good with God"... are mistaken and doomed it they dont flee to Christ. Without Him there is only death, judgment and damnation. Flee to Him and death has no hold on you, you are saved and receive eternal Life.
