2023 inflation hit a 40-year high, coinciding with Gen Z entering the workforce and they are not spending as much money. A recent Bankrate survey found those under 26 tip the least. This might be what finally causes the tip culture to end, during their generation. 

64.5% of Gen Zers do not always tip their server at a sit-down restaurant. Compared to 83% of baby boomers who felt obligated to always tip. This view on tipping continued the same trend with food delivery and taxi or Uber drivers.

The survey last year showed

2019 only  77% always tipped at dine in restaurants. 

In 2021 75% only did

In 2022 only 73% did  

In 2023 65% did, and even that is winnowing away in 2024. 

 

That’s trend is not just at restaurants; 

30% of women do not always tip their hairstylist every time they get a cut, while  54% of men dont always tip their barber.  76% of Gen Z dont always tip their hairstylists, compared to 40% of millennials who dont always tip and 33% of Gen Xers who dont always tip.

Over 40% of all U.S. adults told Bankrate they think businesses, not patrons, should be paying their employees better, instead of relying on customers to shore up the difference with tips. Many Americans have become fed up with tipping culture, citing “tipping fatigue” as a result of the iPad screens with tipping options suddenly appearing at seemingly every business.

The uptick in digital tip prompts, at check out while eating or elsewhere spurred a debate about “guilt tipping” in which customers tip only out of obligation, as the cashier looks them right in the eyes. That's coercion, a shake down.

A ticktocker declared, "I’m not going to tip you just because you turned or handed me a payment device. To me, it’s just companies trying to get away with not paying their employees a proper wage—they have the assets to pay more but they just don’t want to out of greed. So, they try to pressure YOU to pay them with more of YOUR money by a tip."

"I tip every time I eat out, but the guilt and judgment of those who dont needs to stop. The whole issue is in the hands of the waiters and waitresses, but they do nothing but try to judge & coerce people into demanding "big tips or dont eat out". They arent entitled to our money, we paid the cost of the food as the business requires."

Isn't it time the servers gather online, unite, form a national organization to end tips, and strike nationwide with a "end tips" campaign A strike for a few days will cause the industry to change overnight. And demand change  without having to up menu prices, as Europe and globally charge the same prices.  If an few employers cant stay in business like that, they have no business running one. 

One former server admitted why they dont want regular wage: "I served tables for well over a decade through school and ended up in 5 star restaurants making $40-50 an hour off tips my last few years. 

I can assure you tipping culture isn’t going away in the least. 

With that said, by law a restaurant cannot mandate a tip. Policies where they add gratuity for large parties always have the note included that should the guest protest, the gratuity would be removed. 

Typically, I never got the manager to add the gratuity because I would do much better without it. However, there certainly were parties where I would get it added." 

Stop double charging Americans for their meal. This totally needs to change both for those eating and the majority working in lower paying server businesses.

Tip culture needs to end, and the government needs to step in and ensure it does. End all tipping in America. ALL OF IT.
