Atheists know God exists
We know there is a God and we know it’s the God of the Bible. Atheists know this too. Scripture says they suppress the truth in unrighteousness because they live darkness; they love their wicked sins. And it says they hate him and are angry with God without cause. They spent their entire life trapped by and chained enslaved to the sin nature and know nothing of freedom nor righteousness.
They've been living without God their whole lives only know evil, hate, bitterness, cynical, and angry. We understand that, and we just want to tell them the truth that that will set them free. Same as with all people in false religions and false churches, and all who are not born again.
So Christian, we are to care about them as a fellow image bearer of God and remember they are a sinner just as we were before we were born again by God. It is only by His grace that we were saved.
So speak with that in mind, be patient, gentle, not quarrelsome, not rude nor self righteous, but helpful & reason with them out of love and concern for their soul. Remembering when witnessing, we bring the message, not there to win arguments; the only "winning" that matters is if we were faithful to share the truth and gospel, and pray it brought them closer to Christ than they were yesterday.
Direct them to resources to investigate, so perhaps by the reasoning with their mind and conscience that God will open their eyes, and reveal the truth to them.
