Eternal Soul of Humans
Q: I go to church and know not everyone who reads the Bible will come to the same conclusions that you do.
I can think of some verses that appear to point to annihilation.
God doesn't need to kill those who reject Him, He doesn't need to torture them for eternity to prove how terrible sin is.
A: Those led by God will find the truth because the Holy Spirit reveals eternal truths of God through Scripture.
God was clear the wages of sin is death. We died spiritually the moment Adam sinned in Eden, and physical death sentence was also decreed. We are alive yet dead. So too in eternity it does not mean our eternal soul will die out of existence if we die in our sins.
Also, God doesnt torture people in Hell, they are in tirment of themselves because they realized and gained knowledge of the truth and can never escape that eternal place of God's wrath being poured out in them.
And, on the contrary, the immortality of the soul is clearly seen in many places in Scripture. For example, in Psalm 23:6 David says, “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” In Ecclesiastes 12:7 the Preacher mentions two things that happen at death: “The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” In 1 Thessalonians 4:14, Paul says that believers who have died will be with Christ at the rapture of the church: “We believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.” All these passages indicate that the soul is immortal.
2 Corinthians 5:8 teaches, to be “absent from the body” is to be “present with the Lord”
All souls are immortal, but they are not eternal in the same way that God is. God is the only eternal being in that He alone is without a beginning or end. God has always existed and will always continue to exist.
If the soul isn’t immortal, Jesus wouldn’t bother in preparing a place for you (John 14:1-4).
Further, as far as “everyone who reads the Bible will come to the same conclusion that you do” does not negate the fact that there is a correct view of Scripture.
Just because someone was shaped by the way they were raised is a psychogenic fallacy. It doesn’t address correct interpretation, rather the why someone believes something….
First of all, God doesn’t “torture” people. That’s a strawman. On the contrary He allows people free will and loves them enough to give them that free will to freely love Him. With that freedom, they can also choose not to worship Him and He’s not going to force anyone into eternity with Him if they don’t want anything to do with Him on earth…
The punishment of the wicked in hell is described throughout Scripture as “eternal fire” (Matthew 25:41), “unquenchable fire” (Matthew 3:12), “shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2), a place where “the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44-49), a place of “torment” and “fire” (Luke 16:23-24), “everlasting destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:9), a place where “the smoke of torment rises forever and ever” (Revelation 14:10-11), and a “lake of burning sulfur” where the wicked are “tormented day and night forever and ever” (Revelation 20:10).
Currently humans are considered dead. Dead in trespasses and sins. Spiritually dead as well. That is why the eternal destination of the unsaved is the 2nd death, and the place where wrath and punishment is an eternal place. God is giving the redeemed perfect bodies for eternity with Him, and eternal bodies fit for eternal punishment for the unsaved in eternity.
Sin isn’t just terrible, it’s what separates us from God’s Holiness and if we aren’t found in Christ, we will be separated from Him forever and that’s on us, not Him.
Jesus spoke more on Hell than on Heaven, for a great reason. Many "churches" have false teachings on what Scripture says, so I encourage you to look into this deeper and with spiritual eyes seeking truth. Do not be decieved but may God open your eyes on this important biblical doctrine:
