Q: if we cannot take on the burden of our own sin and somehow do good or do something ourselves to fix our bad....what was the need for all the animal sacrifices?
A:
Animal sacrifices did not atone for sin. Rather, they pointed to the fact that God requires that blood must be shed for the forgiveness of sins. Only someone perfect could accomplish that requirement, so God did it.
Remember in Eden when God promised the Messiah? God himself killed an animal and clothed the sinners. Later, Able brought a animal sacrifice to God. Abraham brought his son as a sacrifice showing what God would do in Christ, a father giving up His son, as sacrifice, the son being obedient and even carrying the wood up the hill, and God providing the sacrifice in the end. Then Moses getting Hebrews out of Egypt, the passover and lambs blood shed and covering the people. And Israel God set up everything for the nation and thru the OT constantly pointed to the Messiah who would take away sins. He would be The true Lamb promised. His blood would be shed, his blood & righteousness covers. NT tells us to put on the Lord Jesus. And notes to put on righteousness of Christ. To be clothed in Christ.
It is fascinating study, as the OT points to Christ and the NT reveals Him (and completes the mission).

Thats what the Gospel is about; how to be made right with God.
