the word "Religion"
Christians never refer to Christianity as a "religion:, but if they do it is in this manner:
Non Christians today make use of the word "religion" talked about as a bad word, in reference to Christianity. But in truth if it's referred to rightly in reference to Christianity, people will see they held to a gross misunderstanding and misrepresentation of Christianity. People speak on things they truly know not about.
James spoke of the actions of the true believer, but all the religions outside Christianity...they teach the false doctrines of men that decieve and damn, which is in total contrast to what God has told us in Scripture that mankind is to do and uphold, which is rightly done among those born again.
James tells us in Scripture, by the Holy Spirit: "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this- to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world."
James 1:27
Christianity is the only faith [religion] that values life; focuses on man made in God's image, values women, children and those who are less fortunate. Every other religion and worldview could care less. Simply look at history across mans existence and outside of Judeo-Christianity... you fend for yourself, get sacrificed, are seen as trash or property. And any in the West outside of this who claim they care too.... it is only because you grew up in the West which was heavily influenced and founded on principles of Christianity, that your society has these views, values and laws.
Not only were those in the Bible, (speaking across all of man's existence across time), the only ones following God rightly and living with a value towards human life and each other, but when Israel was founded.... God made the laws to ensure these things were the norm, valued and treasured. And also the [actual] poor, and the parents/elderly.
Jesus called people out of secular and false religion..... to follow Him. To follow the Truth. To be set apart by God to be Holy, and grow in holiness and righteousness day by day to become conformed to be like Jesus.
We are wise to read God's Word, [the Bible], and to obey the teachings therein, including the Gospel which radically changes people from lovers of sin and evil, to lovers of righteousness and good. And as a bonus free gift: God gives us life in Heaven for eternity.

Christianity, as the true religion, is about loving God rightly & loving others with Christlike love.
However, "deceptive religion" or "religions" (including cults) refer to all human-made systems of rituals, practices, and moral rules that people try to live by in order to gain some blessing or in order to please some god or supernatural force, or in order to be saved (with variations of what they think salvation means). When they think of religion in this limited way, then I agree that true Christianity does not fit that because:
1. Christianity is not a human-made system.
2. In true Christianity, we do not save ourselves by rituals and our own goodness (these have other purposes than our salvation), but we are saved by God's grace through faith in Jesus.
3. Also, while Christianity certainly involves morals, they reflect God, and are a result of salvation, including some rituals (like baptism and the Lord's Supper; which simply visually publicly aligning ourselves with Jesus), it as a faith is primarily relational. And only possible because God brought us to Himself.
The religions of man attempt to reach a god or God but never will. It is impossible, because YHWH only made and only offers 1 way to Him.
